More about Tom Van Winkle

Undergraduate Institution: Carleton College, Political Science

Graduate Institution: University of Wisconsin-Madison, Educational of Administration (M.S.) and Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (Ph.D.)

As Executive Director, Tom is the senior administrative officer at Williams-Mystic. Tom joined the Williams-Mystic team in July 2015 after spending 25 years serving as a leader in public schools and non-profit education organizations. Early in his career, Tom served as a teacher and middle school principal and then worked for 13 years for Expeditionary Learning, an education reform nonprofit with deep roots in the Outward Bound tradition. He has been a school designer, director of professional development, managing director of school services, and chief operating officer.

Tom has strong and long-lasting familial ties to Williams-Mystic and Mystic Seaport Museum as well as the surrounding community. He is deeply passionate about the ocean and its ecological health. Tom enjoys sailing, running, varnishing, and generally messing around with boats.
